ARTIST STATEMENT
Nostalgia is initiated by the senses. Often, familiar environments bring us feelings of longing which is what I intended to do through this piece. I was inspired by the cozy, romanticized portrayals of nature in old Disney movies, and wanted to replicate the feelings they invoked. My interpretation of the environment theme was to illustrate a space that serves as an escape from the tribulations of daily life, much like how a fairytale briefly removes us from reality into a space where everything just falls into place. I originally began this painting without strict references, hoping that this would reflect the nostalgic, somewhat inaccurate quality of memories, yet quickly found that this further confined me towards trying to achieve realism. I eventually learned how to enhance this feeling through finding the right references, leaning into the impressionistic style I aimed to create.

The complexity of emotions is something that my mom sometimes handles through fruit. Since I was young, the act of my mom cutting up fruit had infinitely more meaning than spoken words---it could be used to comfort, to apologize, to say "I love you" without explicitly doing so. I decided to make the subject of my piece oranges, primarily because they're my mom's favorite fruit, but also to convey a sense of warmth. "Happy", "satisfied", "comfortable" emotions are often associated with warm colors, so I wanted my subject's color palette to reflect this. I eventually decided to make the background a very pale blue to create both physical and implied contrast within the piece-orange and blue are complementary colors, opposite from one another on the color wheel, just as how sadness and happiness are often considered to be opposite emotions. Both need to coexist with one another in order for the other to exist. I also maintained a flatter texture in the background and more complex, varying textures through layering wax on the oranges, since I wanted this part of the piece to stand out and reflect dynamic, complex, ever-varying qualities/intricacies of emotion.
